There are several factors that contribute to a wrinkle formation on the skin ranging from genetics to environmental factors. Regardless of the numerous factors, it is important to note that they all cause wrinkles due to loss of collagen and elastin.
Collagen and elastin are the building blocks (proteins) that give the skin its elasticity and firmness. As we age, fibroblasts (the principal active cell in connective tissue) lose their ability to form new collagen and elastin fibers. Because of this, skin eventually loses its ability to regenerate and/or return back to its original shape when stretched or bent (loses elasticity). When this happens, wrinkles appear!
So what are the top 10 most important causes of wrinkles?
1. Age Wrinkles
At the top of the list, ageing. As the years pass by, fibroblasts lose their natural capability to produce collagen and elastin which provide firmness and elasticity to the skin.
2. Wrinkles due to Exposure to UV light (sun and tanning)
When skin is exposed to UV rays it actively loses its capability to produce collagen and elastin. UV rays stimulate the production of free radicals (bad guys) on the skin and even damage its DNA. Wear sunscreen!
3. Wrinkles and Imperfections Caused by Smoking
There are more than 4,000 chemicals in tobacco and a lot of these destroy collagen and elastin directly
4. Everyday Wrinkles and Repetitive Habits (facial expressions, sleeping patterns, etc)
Sleeping on one side of your face your whole life can cause creases and wrinkles to appear due to constant manipulation and stretching of that part of the skin in particular, with time skin will lose its ability to snap back into its original position. The same principle applies to constant facial expressions. A good tip is to sleep on a silk pillowcase and try to sleep on your back.
5. Wrinkles Caused by Specific Diets
A nutrient rich diet is important to maintain healthy skin (on a cellular level) keeping its collagen and elastin production levels optimal. Antioxidants play a big role in eliminating free radicals caused by UV rays. Eat your greens!
6. Wrinkles Caused by Not Hydrating Properly
The outermost layer of the skin needs to be properly hydrated in order to effectively carry nutrients into the skin's cells and flush away any toxins or harmful material in the exterior. Dehydrated skin will cause cell shrinkage and make skin appear irritated, flaky and itchy. Wrinkles itself become more visible when skin is not properly hydrated. Water gives skin its plumpness and elasticity. Always hydrate by drinking water and using a facial moisturizer.
7. Not Getting Enough Sleep can Cause Wrinkles
Skin regenerates during sleep, if you don't get enough sleep (quantity and quality) your skin will not be able to reverse some of the damage that might have been caused to it during the day. Get at least 7 hours of sleep a day!
8. Stress Is A Major Cause of Wrinkles
When we are stressed, our body releases a substance called cortisol. Cortisol directly affects collagen and elastin production in our skin.
9. Sedentary Life can Cause Major Wrinkles
Getting up and moving increases blood flow throughout our body. This means that our skin cells will be getting all the nutrients necessary in order to thrive. If we live a sedentary life, blood flow will not be sufficient to distribute the necessary nutrients to our skin. Get up and move!
10. Wrinkles Caused by Inefficient Skincare Routine
Skin care routine is important to keep it clean, hydrated and protected from the sun. An efficient skin care routine must include (as a minimum) a ph balanced cleanser, moisturizer and sun protection during the day.
It's in your hands! Most of these causes are factors you can actually control. If you start creating good habits, you could actually prevent wrinkles! If you do get some wrinkles, it is not the end of the world. Wrinkles are to be embraced since they portray one's life experiences. They can give a lot of personality to a face and some think that they even make people more attractive!
